Professional A/C Maintenance Checklist: So You’ll Know What to Expect

If you haven’t scheduled professional A/C maintenance yet this year, you should get it done before the end of summer. A tune-up keeps your equipment running smoothly so you stay comfortable while spending less on your energy bills. Here’s a look at what professional A/C maintenance entails so you’ll know what to expect.
- Check the thermostat: The settings should help you stay comfortable and save energy. If you don’t already have a programmable thermostat in place, the technician may explain the benefits and offer to install one for you during the equipment tune-up.
- Tighten electrical connections: Loose connections can cause faulty, unsafe operation and shorten the life of your equipment, so the technician tightens these securely. It’s also important to measure voltage and current on motors to ensure everything is running smoothly.
- Apply lubricant: Moving parts lacking lubrication create more friction, which consumes more energy and can cause the system to overheat. Lubricant is the solution to this problem.
- Inspect the condensate drain: The air conditioner removes moisture from the air as it cools. Water collects in the condensate pan and drains away. A quick inspection ensures nothing is blocking the drain and preventing the water from being drawn off properly.
- Check system controls: The air conditioner should follow a certain cycle when turning on, operating and shutting down. The technician ensures these cycles are happening properly for safe, efficient operation.
- Clean the coils: Dirt and dust can collect on the evaporator and condenser coils, reducing efficiency. Keeping the coils clean helps save energy and prolong the equipment’s life.
- Recharge the refrigerant: Too much or too little refrigerant makes your system less efficient. The technician checks the level and tops it off if necessary.
- Clean the blower: Airflow problems caused by a dirty blower can drastically reduce system efficiency. This step ensures greater comfort and energy efficiency.
- Change the filter: A clean filter ensures air flows through the ductwork at the proper rate for ideal comfort and efficiency.
