Electrical Safety Check Points For Your Home

Electrical problems in your Dayton home can be intimidating and in some cases risky to your home and family. If you have concerns with any of the following electric areas in your home, call a licensed electrician.
Circuit Breakers
Circuit breakers are designed to shut off the electrical supply to an overloaded circuit to prevent equipment damage and fires. If you have a circuit breaker that continually trips, reducing the number of appliances you have plugged into the circuit might solve the problem. If not, call your electrician for expert repairs.
Mild Shocks
If you get a mild shock or tingling sensation when you touch an appliance, it may be an indication of a ground fault or bad wiring. The static shocks you get when you touch a door knob or appliance after walking across a carpet, especially on dry winter days, are not indicators of an electrical safety issue in your house.
Light Fixtures
Check the ceiling around light fixtures for signs of overheating. Poor insulation or light bulbs that exceed the fixture’s recommended wattage can cause overheating. Replace incandescent bulbs with CFLs or LEDs to reduce heat. If a light bulb flickers, be sure it’s tight. If the flickering continues, ask an electrician to check the wiring for safety.
Switches and Outlets
Switches and receptacles that don’t work smoothly can be an indication of loose wiring or worn parts. If a receptacle doesn’t hold a plug tightly, it can cause sparking and present a shock or fire hazard. Have your electrician replace malfunctioning switches or outlets.
Smoke, Sparks and Popping Sounds
Momentary sparking when you plug some appliances in may be normal. If you notice that a receptacle continues to spark, or if you detect smoke or popping noises coming from a switch or outlet, shut off the circuit breaker serving that circuit and call your electrician for expert help.
